Accessibility
We want every reader to be able to browse the catalogue, read about a book and reach an author. This site is built to WCAG 2.2 level AA and tested against it before every release.
How the site is built
- Every page has one heading that names it, headings in order, and landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer. A skip link is the first thing the keyboard reaches.
- Everything works with a keyboard alone: menus open and close with Enter and Escape and return focus to where you were; the mobile menu keeps focus inside it until you close it; focus is always visible.
- Text and its background meet at least 4.5:1 contrast everywhere, including links, labels and badges. Body text is never smaller than 16 px on a phone and scales with your browser settings; the page still works at 400 % zoom without sideways scrolling.
- Every cover and portrait has a text alternative that names the book or the person. Purely decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
- Nothing moves on its own. There are no carousels that advance, no animations that loop, and the few hover transitions are switched off when your system asks for reduced motion.
- Search and the catalogue filters are ordinary forms that work with JavaScript turned off.
How it is tested
Automated checks (axe-core, WCAG 2.2 AA rules) run on every template on desktop and mobile viewports as part of the build, and a keyboard-only walkthrough of the navigation is part of the same test suite. A release that fails either does not ship.
Known limitations
Book covers are images of text by nature; the title and author are always repeated as real text beside them. Purchase links go to Amazon, whose pages we do not control.
