Biography

A basement full of things nobody came back for.

Nan Truesdale writes the Teasel Depot mysteries. She grew up in a Pennsylvania county with one funeral home, one pharmacy with a lunch counter, and a rail branch that ran twice a day and complained about it. She spent an unglamorous decade in an office that decided whether people’s accounts of their own belongings were true, which turned out to be excellent training for writing a detective who has no gun, no badge, and no intention of minding her own business.

She lives near the end of a different line now, with a garden she keeps badly and a stack of other people’s photographs she has not managed to throw away.

What you can count on

The signature under every Nan Truesdale novel

  1. Fair play, actually

Every clue the reader needs is on the page before the answer is. You can solve it. Hattie usually gets there first.

  2. A sleuth who is not sweet

Harriet Pell has no gun, no badge, and no intention of minding her own business. She is nobody’s idea of nice, and she is usually right.

  3. Nothing that will make you flinch

Low violence, nothing on the page. The town has a funeral home and a train that comes twice a day; that is as dark as the furniture gets.

  4. An ensemble that carries the book

Eleven hundred and forty people, one pharmacy, one Grange Hall. The town does as much of the work as the murder does.

  5. One thing that does not get fixed

Every book leaves something unrepaired. That is the price of a mystery told honestly.
